The Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) has secured 22 lawmakers in the House of Representatives, meeting the threshold to form a parliamentary group after the Sept. 23 elections.
A party political bureau source told Hespress AR that the group’s membership is now final following a political agreement that brought three lawmakers into its ranks.
Hanan Zmizem, elected under the New Democrats Party, joined the PPS earlier this week, bringing its parliamentary representation to 20. Two lawmakers elected under the Democratic and Social Forces Front joined on Friday, raising the total to 22.
The House of Representatives’ rules require at least 20 members to form a parliamentary group, excluding affiliated lawmakers.
The PPS has therefore returned to the same number of members it held during the 2021-2026 legislative term.
The latest moves also affect smaller parties seeking parliamentary representation. The Democratic and Social Forces Front had agreed with the Unity and Democracy Party, the Equity Party and the New Democrats to form a joint parliamentary group called the “Democratic Choice.”
But the Unity and Democracy Party and the Equity Party, which together hold three seats, cannot form a parliamentary group on their own because the rules require at least four members.
