September 2026 was the hottest September in Morocco since 1981, with temperatures averaging 2.75 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 climate reference, the General Directorate of Meteorology said.
The record surpassed previous highs in September 1987, when temperatures were 1.99 degrees above the reference average, and September 2020, when the difference reached 1.78 degrees.
The meteorological agency attributed the heat to warm tropical air masses, hot and dry chergui winds blowing in from the east, and a persistent heat dome that trapped hot air and limited cloud formation.
Several cities also recorded new temperature records. Sidi Slimane reached 47.1 C on Sept. 3, breaking its previous record of 45.8 C set in 1988. Kenitra hit 45.1 C the same day, surpassing its 2006 record of 44.6 C, while Sale reached 44.3 C, above its previous high of 43.6 C recorded in 2021.
Laayoune recorded 45.8 C on Sept. 8, beating its previous September record of 45 C set in 2005.
The agency said the figures reflect a broader pattern of global warming, which is increasing the likelihood and intensity of extreme heat events.
