Morocco’s newly elected Parliament opens its first legislative session Friday, with lawmakers looking to King Mohammed VI’s address for the priorities that will frame a five-year term beginning while the country’s next government is still being assembled.
The King will chair the opening at Parliament at 3:45 p.m. and address members of both chambers, in accordance with Article 65 of the Constitution. It will be the first parliamentary opening since the Sept. 23 legislative elections and the start of Morocco’s 12th legislature.
The timing gives the speech particular political weight. Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri was appointed head of government on Sept. 29 after PAM finished first in the election, but consultations over the composition of her government are still underway.
Idriss Sentissi, newly elected with the Istiqlal parliamentary group after previously leading the Popular Movement group, said the address would provide a “road map for the next five years” for both Parliament and the executive.
He said lawmakers would be looking particularly for the strategic projects and broad policy priorities that would shape the work of constitutional institutions during the new term.
