Royal Air Maroc clarifies Flydubai co-pilot’s past training with the airline, as UAE confirm terrorism intent

Royal Air Maroc said the co-pilot involved in an incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 completed three months of theoretical training with the Moroccan airline in 2025 but was not hired.

In a statement, RAM said the training was part of a recruitment process and that the co-pilot’s application was rejected after the program.

The clarification follows reports that the co-pilot had previously worked for Royal Air Maroc. The airline said he had only completed the three-month training period and was never employed by the company.

The clarification comes after UAE authorities said investigations found that the co-pilot had attempted to carry out a “terrorist act” during the flight. UAE Attorney-General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said the co-pilot attacked the captain with a crash axe in the cockpit and attempted to take control of the aircraft.

The flight, which was bound for Israel, was diverted to Saudi Arabia following the incident. UAE authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, including inquiries into the co-pilot’s motives and any potential links, as well as analysis of physical and digital evidence.
