Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party has frozen the membership of Tangier Mayor Mounir Limouri across all party structures as he faces a criminal investigation linked to alleged irregularities during the Sept. 23 legislative election.
PAM’s National Arbitration and Ethics Committee announced the decision Friday, Oct. 2, after receiving a referral from the party’s political bureau concerning allegations against Limouri, who also serves as PAM’s provincial secretary in Tangier-Assilah.
The party had publicly identified him in both positions during the election campaign.
The committee said the disciplinary measure was separate from criminal responsibility and stressed both judicial independence and Laymouri’s presumption of innocence. It said criminal liability could only be established through a final judicial ruling.
The sanction nevertheless marks PAM’s first formal internal action against one of its senior Tangier officials since the election investigation widened.
An investigating judge at the Tangier Court of Appeal has placed Limouri in pre-trial detention over allegations including interference with voting operations with the aim of altering or attempting to alter the result, participation in falsifying a public document and corruption.
