Rabat Royal Theatre to Host Dance Theatre of Harlem for First-Ever Performances in Morocco

The Royal Theatre of Rabat will host the legendary Dance Theatre of Harlem on October 2 and 3, one of the most iconic companies on the international dance scene.

These two performances will mark the first-ever appearance in Morocco of this renowned New York-based company, which is also returning to the African continent over 30 years after its last visit, according to a press release by the company.

Founded in New York in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell, the first Black principal dancer at the New York City Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem has held a distinctive place in the history of ballet for over half a century.

Since its inception, the company’s mission has been rooted in a strong belief in opening classical dance to talents long excluded from its major institutions and making the stage a space for creativity accessible to all, the same source recalls.

Initially established as a school in Harlem, the initiative quickly evolved into a professional company. Over decades, Dance Theatre of Harlem has forged an artistic identity that combines classical heritage, contemporary creation and diverse choreographic styles.

Its journey, which has taken it to some of the world’s most prestigious stages, has featured landmark moments, including its debut at the Royal Opera House in London in 1981 and the success of “Creole Giselle,” which received a Laurence Olivier Award a few years later.

The New York-based company’s visit to Rabat forms part of a story that transcends a simple international tour. By returning to the African continent, where it performed in South Africa in 1992 at the invitation of Nelson Mandela, Dance Theatre of Harlem is opening a new chapter in its history in Africa.

The Moroccan capital is also among the highlights of its 2026-2027 international season, alongside several major American cities.

For this Moroccan debut, the company will take to the stage at the Royal Theatre of Rabat, the capital’s new cultural landmark. Part of HM King Mohammed VI’s enlightened Vision to enhance the Kingdom’s cultural influence, the venue embodies the ambition to make Rabat a cultural capital open to the world.

With its lines inspired by the movements of the Bouregreg River and its auditorium seating more than 1,800 people, designed to host operas, ballets, plays and major musical productions, this landmark venue gives a fitting setting for this event.
