France has proposed the third week of January 2027 for King Mohammed VI’s long-awaited state visit, as Paris and Rabat work to finalize a bilateral treaty expected to be one of the trip’s main outcomes.
La Tribune Dimanche reported Sunday, citing a diplomatic source, that the Élysée had proposed that window to the Moroccan Royal Cabinet. Exact dates have not yet been approved and are expected to be fixed in the coming weeks.
The report narrows the timetable for a visit that Moroccan and French officials had already confirmed but left undated. Le Monde reported in July that plans for an autumn 2026 visit had shifted to early 2027, in part because work on the bilateral treaty required more time.
The treaty is now close to completion, according to La Tribune Dimanche, which said the committees working on it held their latest session on September 21.
French officials have described the agreement as a first of its kind for France with a non-European country, drawing comparisons with treaties such as the Quirinal agreement with Italy. France’s Foreign Ministry confirmed in May that Paris and Rabat had begun work on such a treaty as part of their “reinforced exceptional partnership.”
King Mohammed VI’s last state visit to France was in 2000. President Emmanuel Macron’s October 2024 state visit to Morocco marked the formal launch of a new phase in bilateral relations after several years of tension, with both sides adopting the “reinforced exceptional partnership” framework.
If confirmed, the January visit would be expected to culminate in the signing of the new treaty, whose preparation has become a central part of the renewed relationship between Rabat and Paris.
