Moroccan authorities mobilized firefighting crews and two Canadair water-bombing aircraft Friday to battle a forest fire in the Tanghaya forest in the Abrouj area of Chefchaouen province.
The two aircraft quickly joined ground operations, making several flights over the affected area and dropping water on active fire zones as crews worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading.
Chefchaouen’s provincial governor visited the site to oversee firefighting operations, alongside officials and teams involved in the response.
The firefighting effort includes personnel from Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests, civil protection services, local authorities, auxiliary forces and the Royal Gendarmerie. Local commune officials and residents have also joined efforts to contain the fire.
Water tankers, firefighting equipment and four-wheel-drive vehicles have been deployed to support operations and prevent the flames from spreading to surrounding forested and populated areas.
The fire has burned a large area of forest cover, according to local authorities, while firefighting and containment operations were still underway Friday.
Authorities warned that the risk of further spread remained, requiring continued monitoring and a high level of readiness as Morocco enters a period of heightened wildfire risk.
Officials and forestry specialists have urged residents to quickly report smoke or other signs of fire to allow firefighting teams to intervene at an early stage and limit the spread of wildfires.
