Morocco and Israel agreed Wednesday to upgrade their diplomatic relations by elevating their missions in both countries to full embassies and appointing ambassadors, following a trilateral meeting in New York involving the foreign ministers of the two countries and the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz at the meeting, which focused on measures to strengthen ties between Israel and Morocco.

According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry, the three sides reaffirmed their commitment to steps aimed at advancing bilateral relations, including upgrading the status of the two diplomatic missions to embassies and appointing ambassadors.

Morocco and Israel also agreed to finalize agreements on investment protection and the prevention of double taxation by the end of 2026. The agreements are intended to facilitate reciprocal investment and further develop economic and commercial ties between the two countries.

The two sides also agreed to expand direct air connections between Morocco and Israel to include flights operated by Moroccan airlines, with the measure expected to take effect by the end of 2026.

The agreement also includes plans for reciprocal high-level visits between the two countries in the coming months.

The move represents a further formalization of the diplomatic ties restored by Morocco and Israel in 2020 under the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords. Israel currently operates a liaison office in Rabat rather than a full embassy.
