Morocco’s National Water and Forest Agency has placed six provinces on red alert for extreme wildfire risk from Sept. 11 to 15, according to its latest forecast bulletin.
The highest alert level covers Fahs-Anjra, Tangier-Assilah, Taounate, Taza, Essaouira and Taroudant.
Another 24 provinces and prefectures face a high risk, particularly in northern and central Morocco and along the Atlantic coast. Eight others are classified as facing a moderate risk.
The agency, known as ANEF, said its assessment combines forecasts for the coming days with local terrain data and the flammability of vegetation.
It urged people living near forests, visitors and other forest users to exercise particular caution and avoid any activity that could start a fire.
Residents and visitors should immediately notify local authorities if they spot smoke or suspicious behavior, the agency said.
