Chinese textile company Shengtai has advanced plans to build the Shengtai Morocco Green Textile Industrial Park after obtaining an overseas investment certificate and registration notice from Chinese authorities, the company said.
The project is expected to represent an investment of up to 2.29 billion dirhams ($230 million), or about 1.716 billion Chinese yuan, according to Shengtai.
The project is part of an investment agreement the company signed with Morocco in March 2025 to establish a textile manufacturing complex producing high-quality cotton yarn, fabrics and clothing.
The project will be built through two industrial units in Skhirat and Fez, according to details released about the agreement. It will involve acquiring a combined 34 hectares of land and constructing production workshops and related facilities.
The project is expected to be completed in phases over a period of no more than five years.
Large-scale production
The planned production capacity includes 100,000 spindles of high-quality cotton yarn annually, 10,800 tons of dyed and finished fabrics, 15 million meters of woven fabrics and 22 million pieces of clothing.
The facilities are expected to cover several stages of the textile production chain, from spinning and weaving to dyeing, finishing and garment manufacturing.
The project is also expected to create 7,000 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect jobs, for a total of 8,500 positions.
Shengtai project follows similar Sunrise investment
Shengtai’s plans come as another major Chinese textile company, Sunrise, has moved forward with a 2.3 billion-dirham investment agreement to establish two industrial units in Skhirat and Fez.
According to Morocco’s official government portal, the Sunrise project is expected to create 7,000 direct jobs and more than 1,500 indirect jobs, also bringing the total to about 8,500 positions.
The two projects share several similarities, including their locations and areas of production.
Both Shengtai and Sunrise plan to establish facilities in Fez and Skhirat, while both projects include the production of yarn, fabrics and clothing.
The Sunrise agreement also identifies strengthening local textile sourcing, reducing logistics costs and delivery times, and improving Moroccan companies’ access to international markets as key objectives.
Shengtai’s vertically integrated production model, which covers spinning, weaving, dyeing, finishing and garment manufacturing, similarly points to an effort to develop multiple stages of the textile supply chain within Morocco.
The projects underscore Morocco’s efforts to attract large-scale textile investments and expand domestic manufacturing capacity while strengthening links between Moroccan production and global markets.
