Firefighters were working Saturday to extinguish remaining hotspots in the Tazart forest fire in Chefchaouen province after containing the blaze on all sides, according to preliminary field reports.
The fire has burned about 15 hectares since it began four days ago. Authorities expected to declare it fully extinguished once crews eliminated roots and other hot material that could reignite under strong winds.
Teams are using drones equipped with thermal cameras to locate hotspots and transmit their positions to the firefighting command center. Ground crews are then directed to target those areas.
About 380 personnel from several emergency services have participated in the operation. Canadair water-bombing aircraft were deployed during the first day, but strong winds and cloud cover later prevented continued aerial intervention.
Lower temperatures and weaker winds over the past two days helped crews contain the fire despite the province’s dense vegetation and difficult terrain.
The Tazart blaze began days after another fire burned about 65 hectares in Talassemtane National Park, also in Chefchaouen province. The area is regularly placed under elevated forest-fire warnings because of its extensive woodland and summer weather conditions.
