The number of migrants who voluntarily left Germany with support from return programs rose by 26% in the first half of 2026, reaching 9,276, according to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) reported by the German press on Monday.
Support for voluntary return is intended for foreigners who are willing to leave Germany, in order to increase the number of those returning voluntarily and help them settle in after they arrive in their home country or to another host country.
The program covers travel costs and start-up aid up to 1,000 euros per adult and 500 euros per child or teenager. Throughout 2025, the BAMF supported the voluntary departure of 16,576 people, up from 10,358 in 2024, representing a 60% increase.
As of the end of June 2026, around 258,845 people were required to leave Germany, according to data from the Central Register of Foreigners cited by the German press.
However, 199,271 of them were subject to a temporary suspension of deportation. Such a suspension does not remove their legal obligation to leave the country.
