Thunderstorms and flash floods damaged rural roads in at least five Moroccan provinces this week, disrupting access to villages and forcing residents and public agencies to begin emergency repairs.

Local reports and footage documented soil erosion, debris and damaged paved and unpaved sections in Tata, Taroudant, Tiznit, Zagora and Al Haouz. Traffic was interrupted temporarily on some routes, although no prolonged closures were reported.

In Tata province, residents used basic equipment to clear damaged sections of the road leading to Fidoux village in the Tazmert municipality.

A similar community operation was organized in Tidas village, part of Ait Abdellah municipality in Taroudant province. Residents and a bulldozer cleared the unpaved access road after runoff caused extensive damage. The work drew on tiwizi, a traditional system of collective community labor.

In the Amlen municipality of Tiznit province, overflowing waterways carried soil and rocks onto the road leading to Ait Ouassim, damaging sections of the route.

Footage from Afra municipality in Zagora province also showed damage to several roads. One affected section was on National Road 9 near the Tiferkhine bridge, where provincial equipment services intervened to restore access.

Earlier in the week, flash floods swept through the Ourika Valley in Al Haouz province. Floodwater damaged roads and routes serving mountain resorts, alongside tourism businesses and facilities near the Ourika River.

The incidents have renewed concern over the vulnerability of rural roads to short, intense summer storms. Unpaved routes are particularly exposed to erosion, while insufficient drainage can allow runoff to cut roads or deposit rocks and mud across them.

Repair responsibility varies according to the road classification. The Equipment and Water Ministry manages national, regional and provincial roads, while municipal and rural access routes may fall under local authorities or development programs.

Morocco allocated 1.7 billion dirhams to road and water infrastructure repairs under a broader flood-recovery plan announced in February, following severe winter flooding in the country’s northwestern plains.
