Morocco is facing simultaneous thunderstorms and extreme heat on Friday, with temperatures expected to reach 48C in parts of the south as heavy showers, hail and strong winds affect several central provinces, the General Directorate of Meteorology said in an orange-level alert issued Aug. 14.
Thunderstorms bringing 20 to 30 mm of rain are forecast between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday in Al Haouz, Azilal, Khemisset, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Khouribga, Fquih Ben Salah, Meknes, El Hajeb, Ouarzazate and Taroudant.
The storms may be accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts, according to the weather service.
At the same time, a heatwave will continue across southern Morocco through Saturday, with temperatures between 45C and 48C expected in Aousserd, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara and Tata.
Temperatures of 42C to 45C are also forecast Friday in Taounate, Sidi Kacem, Ouezzane and Fquih Ben Salah, as well as inland areas of Laayoune, Tan-Tan and Guelmim.
The latest alert extends a period of intense August heat that has repeatedly pushed temperatures into the mid-to-upper 40s in Morocco’s southern provinces this week. Earlier warnings had already placed Aousserd, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara and Tata under orange-level heat alerts.
Friday’s forecast also includes thunderstorms over parts of the Atlas, Rif, southeast and Oriental regions, while strong gusts may raise dust in southern and southeastern areas.
