Morocco, South Africa set for high-stakes WAFCON quarterfinal clash
Wednesday 5 August 2026 - 16:30

Morocco’s women’s national team will face South Africa in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Aug. 8 in Rabat.

The matchup reunites two of Africa’s top women’s teams. Their most recent meeting came in 2024, when South Africa defeated Morocco 2-0 after a dominant display by Banyana Banyana.

Morocco enters the knockout stage with momentum after finishing first in Group A. The Atlas Lionesses went unbeaten during the group stage and did not concede a goal, while South Africa advanced after finishing second in Group B, setting up one of the tournament’s marquee quarterfinals.

Key strengths

Morocco has built its campaign on defensive solidity, disciplined build-up play and the backing of home supporters. The Atlas Lionesses have shown consistency at the back and patience in possession throughout the tournament.

South Africa, meanwhile, is expected to rely on its pace on the flanks, quick transitions and experience in knockout football. As defending African champions, Banyana Banyana have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to perform under pressure.

Match outlook

The quarterfinal is expected to be closely contested, with both sides possessing the quality to advance.

Morocco’s unbeaten group-stage campaign and home advantage could provide a psychological boost, while South Africa’s recent victory over the Atlas Lionesses and experience in major tournaments make it a formidable opponent.

The outcome is likely to hinge on which team is more clinical in front of goal and better executes its tactical approach.

Kickoff and broadcast

The match will be played at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, with kickoff scheduled for 9 p.m. local time on Aug. 8.

In Morocco, the match will be broadcast by SNRT. Internationally, beIN Sports is among CAF’s official broadcast partners, while supporters in selected territories without a local rights holder will be able to watch the match live on CAF TV.
