Belgian police have arrested a 70-year-old man in Antwerp, accused of allegedly attempting to flee to Morocco while under investigation for suspected physical and sexual assault of a minor family member during Aid-Al-Adha.
The arrest took place after Antwerp police alerted the airport police that the suspect was preparing to board a flight to Morocco, national media reported. Officers intercepted the man shortly before his departure.
According to HLN, the alleged assault dates back to May 27th, when the man allegedly sexually assaulted a minor from his family. The girl told her father, who then wanted to confront the man.
Police arrested the man before he could board his flight, placing him in custody as the investigation continues.
Belgian authorities have not released further details about the alleged victim or the circumstances of the case, in line with privacy protections surrounding minors.
