Spain captured its second FIFA World Cup title on Sunday, defeating defending champion Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, ending a tense contest in which Spain dominated possession and created the overwhelming majority of chances but failed to find a breakthrough during regulation time.

The victory gives Spain its second World Cup crown, 16 years after lifting its first title in South Africa in 2010.

Argentina suffered an early setback when defender Lisandro Martínez was forced off with an injury in the 44th minute and was replaced by Nicolás Otamendi. The reigning champions finished the match with 10 men after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time at the end of regulation.

Spain controlled much of the match and repeatedly threatened Argentina’s defense, registering 15 shots, including 10 on target. Argentina, meanwhile, failed to record a single shot throughout the contest.

After a goalless 90 minutes, Torres finally broke the deadlock midway through extra time, securing the title for the European champions and ending Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy.
