Spain remains determined to host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will jointly organize with Morocco and Portugal, with the head of the Spanish Football Federation saying there is “no reason” why the country should not stage the tournament’s showcase match.
In comments published by Spanish newspaper AS, Spanish Football Federation President Rafael Louzán said the three-country bid faces the major challenge of organizing a tournament spanning three continents and six countries in coordination with FIFA.
Louzán argued that Spain bears around 55% of the organizational burden and insisted that the country has strong grounds to host the final of the centenary edition of the World Cup.
“The debate over the venue for the final will remain,” he said, adding that the issue is not yet ripe for discussion or a final decision.
“I see no reason preventing Spain from hosting the World Cup final,” Louzán said, stressing that the federation would continue working toward that goal.
The Spanish football chief added that the priority remains preserving the unity of the joint bid and working with all partners to deliver what he described as “the best World Cup in history” as the competition marks its 100th anniversary.
The comments come after claims by former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Manuel Rubiales Bejar, who recently alleged that Morocco had agreed during early negotiations that Spain would host the final.
Speaking to Spanish broadcaster EDATV, Rubiales said Morocco and Portugal had accepted the arrangement as part of the discussions that led to the submission of the joint bid.
According to Rubiales, Morocco’s main condition was to participate as a full partner in organizing the tournament rather than hosting only a limited number of matches. He added that the kingdom’s inclusion was crucial to strengthening the bid’s chances of success.
However, a source within the Royal Moroccan Football Federation dismissed those claims, describing them as “unrealistic and inaccurate.”
The source told Hespress that Morocco has a dedicated institution overseeing preparations for the 2030 World Cup and that it remains the only authority able to provide reliable information regarding the tournament’s organization.
The issue of the final’s venue remains unresolved as Morocco, Spain and Portugal continue preparations for the tournament, which will mark the centenary of the World Cup.
According to FIFA, the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar between Argentina and France was the most-watched match in the competition’s history, attracting approximately 1.5 billion viewers worldwide.
