The coastal city of Saidia has become the focus of renewed environmental concerns following growing complaints from residents and holidaymakers over seawater pollution, unpleasant odors and foam appearing on the surface of the water, particularly in areas near the mouth of Oued Kiss.
According to Al Ousboue Assahafi, several witnesses reported a deterioration in water quality that appears to coincide with periods of strong easterly winds. Residents claim that these weather conditions are accompanied by the flow of wastewater into Saidia’s beaches through Oued Kiss, the river that forms part of the border with Algeria.
Some beachgoers also reported cases of skin irritation and allergic reactions after swimming, prompting calls from specialists for scientific and medical investigations to determine the causes and assess the extent of any environmental impact.
As complaints from citizens and tourism professionals continue, demands are mounting for joint environmental inquiries and the activation of diplomatic and legal mechanisms to address any potential sources of pollution.
Observers warn that resolving the issue is essential not only to protect public health but also to preserve the tourism sector in Morocco’s eastern region.
