Morocco’s Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) has condemned what it described as “false and misleading” statements about the Moroccan Sahara made by the Global Sumud Flotilla, urging the coalition to retract the claims and issue an apology.
In a statement, the party said a video circulated by the flotilla misrepresented the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion on the Sahara and ignored relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2797, which backs the U.N.-led political process.
The PJD said the flotilla had overstepped its stated humanitarian mission of supporting Gaza by intervening in an issue it described as unrelated to its activities and one that enjoys broad national consensus in Morocco.
The party argued that participants had joined the initiative to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza, not to comment on Morocco’s territorial integrity, adding that the disputed statements risked undermining the public support the flotilla had received in Morocco.
The PJD also alleged the coalition had been “infiltrated” by actors seeking to promote positions contrary to Morocco’s stance on Western Sahara and called on organizers to correct what it described as a serious mistake.
The Global Sumud Flotilla had not immediately responded publicly to the PJD’s statement.
