Several dozen people and vehicles crossed the border between Gibraltar and Spain just after midnight on Wednesday, as border checks were lifted.
An AFP journalist said several hundred people waving Spanish flags gathered to witness the event and then hurried to cross the border post on foot or by car when a new free movement deal came into force.
