Morocco nearly doubled its foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in 2025, defying a broader decline across North Africa and much of Africa, according to the latest World Investment Report 2026 released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

UNCTAD data showed FDI inflows into Morocco rose 91% to $3.338 billion in 2025 from $1.748 billion a year earlier. The inflows accounted for 7.5% of the country’s gross fixed capital formation, up from 4.2% in 2024.

Morocco also increased its outbound foreign investment, with FDI outflows rising 19.4% to $813 million in 2025, compared with $681 million the previous year.

The report said Morocco stood out as investment flows into Africa fell 26.3% to $69.5 billion in 2025, while North Africa recorded an even steeper 56.3% decline to $22.4 billion, largely because of the absence of exceptionally large investment deals seen the previous year.

Against that backdrop, Morocco nearly doubled its FDI inflows, highlighting the country’s resilience amid regional and global uncertainty.

UNCTAD attributed Morocco’s performance to its economic diversification strategy and continued investment in high-value industries, particularly manufacturing and the automotive sector.

Among the continent’s largest announced greenfield projects in 2025 was a $1.5 billion automotive manufacturing investment by Stellantis in Morocco, placing it among Africa’s top 10 announced greenfield projects. Although the total value of announced greenfield projects in Morocco declined 11.2% to $6.586 billion, the report said the country continued to attract higher-quality strategic investments.

The report also highlighted Morocco’s growing role in renewable energy through the Sila Atlantik Cable project, a major infrastructure initiative combining large-scale renewable energy generation with subsea electricity transmission linking North Africa and Europe. UNCTAD said the project strengthens Morocco’s position as a strategic energy partner for Europe while supporting the country’s transition toward a green economy.

Morocco’s accumulated stock of inward FDI reached $80.8 billion in 2025, a 25.2% increase from the previous year, equivalent to 48.7% of gross domestic product, reinforcing its position as one of the region’s leading investment destinations.

Moroccan companies also expanded their international footprint. The stock of Morocco’s outward FDI rose to $12.655 billion, or 7.6% of GDP, while the value of Moroccan greenfield projects abroad increased 69.1% to $474 million.

Cross-border mergers and acquisitions also rebounded. Morocco recorded $169 million in net sales through cross-border M&A transactions, reversing a net outflow of $811 million in 2024. Meanwhile, Moroccan investors’ net acquisitions abroad climbed 244.9% to $199 million, according to the report.
