Morocco’s Education Minister Saad Berrada denied saying the country’s national football team represented only Morocco and not Africa, after the alleged remarks circulated on social media and were repeated by some online news outlets without a verifiable primary source.
The Education Ministry said in a statement that claims Berrada had declared that “Morocco does not represent Africa” were “entirely false and unfounded,” adding that the minister had not made such comments in any interview or public statement.
The controversy emerged after posts and reports attributed the remarks to Berrada, but no video, audio recording or official transcript was provided to confirm when or where the comments were allegedly made.
Several West African media outlets reported on the claim, citing a supposed “recent statement” by the minister while failing to identify the interview, event or source behind the attribution. Some of those reports were later removed.
“All statements currently circulating and attributed to him [Berrada] in this regard are fabricated and in no way reflect either his position or the official position of the Kingdom of Morocco.”
“The Kingdom of Morocco is proud of its African identity. The historical, human, and cultural ties that unite Morocco with the other nations of the African continent constitute a fundamental pillar of Morocco’s policy, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him,” the statement added.
