The Moroccan embassy in Paris “strongly condemns” the public violation of Morocco’s national flag following incidents that occurred on the evening of July 4, 2026, in Aubervilliers, Paris, following the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Morocco and Canada.
The identity of those who were involved remains under investigation, but the embassy said the individuals, seen in widely circulated social media videos, appeared to identify themselves as being of Algerian origins based on the slogans they were chanting.
The embassy denounced what it described as a serious and unacceptable insult to Morocco’s national flag, calling it an attack to one of the country’s foremost symbols of sovereignty and unity.
The embassy added that the act deeply offended Moroccan citizens living in France, and all those committed to the values of respect, dignity, and peaceful coexistence. Adding that “no circumstances could justify this deliberate act of provocation designed to inflame hatred and disrupt public order.”
The embassy also addressed the viral video circulating online that shows women wearing the Moroccan jersey with their kids being subject to verbal abuse and intimidation by a group of individuals and said that it had reported the incidents to the French authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable under the French law.
The embassy then thanked the French authorities, security services, and the Municipality of Aubervilliers for their cooperation. And praised the Moroccan community in France for demonstrating a “good sense of responsibility throughout the events and remaining faithful to the values of respect and fraternity that characterize relations between Morocco and France.”
The embassy noted that “Sport celebrations should always remain moments of joy, togetherness, and mutual respect, and under no circumstances may they be exploited, manipulated, or used as a pretext for insults, provocations, verbal violence, vandalism, or hateful behavior targeting a particular community, nationality, or the symbols of any state”.
