Morocco vs. Canada: Head-to-head record, team form, and preview ahead of game
Saturday 4 July 2026 - 12:08

The Moroccan and Canadian national teams are set to meet once again at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Canada will be looking for revenge after its last meeting with Morocco ended in a 2–1 victory for the Atlas Lions during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The statistics clearly favor Morocco in the head-to-head record between the two nations. The teams have met four times previously, with Morocco winning three matches and one ending in a draw. Canada has yet to register its first victory over the Atlas Lions.

The two teams first met in 1984, when Morocco secured a 3-2 victory. A decade later, they played out a 1-1 draw in a friendly in 1994. Morocco claimed another win with a 4-0 triumph in a 2016 friendly before defeating Canada 2-1 in their 2022 FIFA World Cup group-stage meeting in Qatar. The two sides are now set to add another chapter to their rivalry when they meet again in 2026.

Hakim Ziyech tops the list of all-time leading scorers in matches between Morocco and Canada with three goals. He is followed by Mustapha El Haddaoui, Youssef En-Nesyri, and Mehdi Carcela, who have each scored one goal. On the Canadian side, Rudy Dolski remains the only player to have found the net against Morocco in the history of this fixture.

Morocco heads into the match confidently after securing a place in the Round of 16 by eliminating the Netherlands in a 3–2 penalty shootout victory, following a 1–1 draw after regulation and extra time. The performance highlighted the Atlas Lions’ resilience, composure, and ability to cope with pressure in a high-stakes encounter.

Canada reached this stage after finishing second in its group with four points. The Canadians opened their campaign with a 6–0 victory over Qatar, followed by a 1–1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, before suffering a 2–1 defeat to Switzerland. In the Round of 32, they kept their World Cup hopes alive by edging South Africa thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Stephen Eustáquio in the 92nd minute (90+2).

Despite Morocco’s superior head-to-head record, the gap between the two teams has narrowed considerably in recent years, setting the stage for a closely contested encounter. The Atlas Lions are targeting a second straight appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals, while Canada is chasing a historic first win over Morocco after failing to prevail in any of their previous meetings.
