Five national team coaches have stepped down after their countries were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Czechia head coach Miroslav Koubek resigned after his side failed to progress beyond the group stage. Ecuador’s Sebastián Beccacece also left his post after Ecuador’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico ended the team’s tournament.
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman resigned less than 24 hours after the Dutch were eliminated by Morocco in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. South Korea’s Hong Myung-bo also departed after his team failed to advance from the group stage, while Scotland manager Steve Clarke stepped down following his side’s defeat to Brazil.
Several of the departing coaches accepted responsibility for their teams’ performances. Koeman said, “No one is more disappointed about that than I am. As head coach, you bear that responsibility.”
Hong apologized to supporters, saying, “I would like to sincerely apologise to the citizens who have loved Korean football and always supported the national team.”
The departures highlight the intense pressure national team coaches face during major international tournaments. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup still underway, the five federations have already begun the search for new head coaches.
