Plastic bags still rank among Morocco’s most common beach litter despite ban

Plastic bags remain among the most common waste found on Morocco’s beaches despite a national ban, according to a global study that points to persistent gaps between plastic restrictions and their enforcement.

The study, published in the journal One Earth, analysed more than 5,300 shoreline surveys covering 112 countries to produce a global ranking of coastal litter.

Food and beverage plastics ranked among the three most common waste categories in 93% of countries, followed by plastic bags in 39% and cigarette waste in 38%.

Researchers said short-lived food packaging, bottle caps and plastic bottles appeared repeatedly across countries with widely different incomes and waste systems, showing that collection and recycling alone cannot contain the problem.

They called for governments to reduce production, promote reusable alternatives and target food packaging, bags and cigarette filters under a future UN plastics treaty.

Only 9% of plastic waste worldwide is recycled, according to the OECD.
