Former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after a confrontation with airport staff and police, an incident that later drew wide attention after bodycam footage circulated online.
The incident took place on Sunday, June 21, after Poirier was reportedly removed from a Delta flight. According to reports, police were called after he became agitated at the gate and argued with airline staff. The bodycam footage showed Poirier visibly upset, shouting at airport personnel and later confronting responding officers.
The situation became tense because of Poirier’s profile as a former professional fighter. In the footage, he could be heard challenging an officer during the exchange. However, the confrontation did not turn into a physical fight. One of the officers appeared to recognize Poirier and tried to calm the situation down, speaking to him directly and attempting to de-escalate before the fighter apologized and eventually handcuffed.
Poirier was taken into custody and booked in Clayton County on a public intoxication charge. Reports said he was released several hours later with no injuries reported during the arrest.
The video quickly spread across MMA platforms and social media because Poirier has long been considered one of the most respected figures in the sport. Known as “The Diamond,” he built his reputation through major UFC fights, including high-profile bouts against Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev.
After the footage circulated, Poirier addressed the incident in an Instagram Story and admitted that he is going through a difficult period after stepping away from fighting.
“I’m at the point where I need some help, walking away from fighting hasn’t been easy on me and alcohol isn’t the answer. It has ruined my father’s life and I will not allow it to ruin mine, my family deserve me at 100%. I’m trying to do everything I can to get my mind right and take the right next steps,” Poirier wrote.
His statement shifted part of the public reaction from the airport confrontation itself to the personal difficulties many fighters face after retirement. Poirier suggested that leaving MMA has affected him mentally and emotionally, while also acknowledging that alcohol has become a problem he wants to confront before it causes further damage.
For many fans, the incident was a troubling moment involving a fighter often admired not only for his career inside the cage but also for his charity work and public image outside it. At the same time, Poirier’s response showed a willingness to take responsibility and seek help.
