Dutch Coach: Brazil holds no edge over Morocco ahead of potential knockout clash

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has praised Morocco’s performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he sees no clear advantage in facing Brazil over the Atlas Lions should the Dutch side meet either team in the knockout stages.

Speaking to reporters, Koeman said he had no preference regarding the Netherlands’ potential next opponent, stressing that both teams pose a significant challenge.

“They are both strong teams. I don’t see Brazil as stronger than Morocco because they drew against each other in their opening match,” Koeman said. “Whoever we face, it will be a difficult game.”

Morocco remains locked in a battle with Brazil for top spot in Group C after defeating Scotland 1-0 to move to four points. Brazil also sits on four points but currently holds the advantage on goal difference heading into the final round of group-stage matches.

The Atlas Lions will face Haiti in their final group game, while Brazil takes on Scotland. The results of those matches will determine which team finishes first and second in the group.

Finishing atop Group C carries significant importance. The group winner will face the runner-up of Group F in the Round of 32 on June 29 in Houston. Group F includes the Netherlands, Sweden, Japan and Tunisia.

Should Morocco finish second, it would instead face the winner of Group F in a Round of 32 match scheduled for June 30 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Koeman’s remarks reflect the growing international respect Morocco has earned following its historic run to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and its strong start to the 2026 tournament. Rather than being viewed as an outsider, Morocco is increasingly regarded as one of the most competitive teams in international football.
