Morocco jumped 20 places to rank 65th out of 163 countries and territories in the 2026 Global Peace Index, up from 85th a year earlier and ahead of every other country in the Maghreb.
The improvement reversed a recent decline in Morocco’s ranking, after it had placed 79th in 2024 before falling to 85th in the 2025 edition, when it recorded a score of 2.012.
The latest ranking places Morocco ahead of Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Mauritania, reinforcing its position among the stronger performers in North Africa and the wider Arab region.
Published annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the index measures countries using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators across three areas: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarization. It covers 99.7% of the world’s population.
Morocco’s rise came as global peacefulness continued to deteriorate. The institute said the average level of peace fell by 0.36%, marking the 13th decline in 17 years. A total of 74 countries improved their scores, while 87 recorded a deterioration.
The report pointed to a growing number of armed conflicts, greater geopolitical tension and increased militarization. It said the number of active conflicts had reached its highest level since the end of World War II, with 59 state-based conflicts recorded in 2024.
Morocco nevertheless improved its overall position, supported by its comparative performance in internal stability and exposure to domestic and international conflict.
Iceland remained the world’s most peaceful country for the 19th consecutive year, followed by New Zealand, Switzerland, Slovenia and Ireland.
Russia ranked last, followed by Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Yemen.
