Moroccan and Spanish security forces seized nearly 4.8 tonnes of hashish after a high-speed chase involving a semi-rigid “go-fast” boat in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Spain’s Guardia Civil said the operation began after officers detected a suspicious vessel moving at high speed and carrying bales believed to contain drugs.
Spanish maritime, air and land units tracked the boat as its crew carried out evasive manoeuvres and began throwing part of the cargo into the sea to reduce weight and increase speed.
Spanish units first recovered 32 bales weighing about 1,200 kilograms.
As the boat moved toward waters close to Morocco, cooperation channels were activated with the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie. Moroccan maritime units deployed quickly, keeping pressure on the vessel and limiting its escape options.
The traffickers then dumped the rest of the cargo. Moroccan authorities recovered another 89 bales weighing about 3,577 kilograms.
In total, the operation led to the seizure of 121 bales, or about 4,777 kilograms of hashish.
