A prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Temara on Sunday ordered the detention of a Moroccan content creator known online as Benesnes pending trial, following his arrest in connection with a controversial video that sparked widespread public outrage.
The suspect was transferred to the local prison of Arjat 1 and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday, according to parties involved in the case.
Complainants said the defendant faces several charges, including allegedly offending Islam, killing and mutilating an animal, issuing threats to commit a misdemeanor and threatening to commit a felony, among other related offenses.
The case has drawn significant public attention after the circulation of a video posted on the content creator’s YouTube channel during the Eid al-Adha holiday.
According to the complainants, the National Organization for Electronic Protection has joined the case as a civil party, represented by lawyer Bouchaib Soufi and supported by the “Zero Tefaha” initiative.
The suspect was arrested two days earlier by police in the city of M’diq after authorities executed a search warrant issued against him following an investigation.
The controversy erupted after the publication of a video in which the content creator appeared to cook a dead dog during the Eid al-Adha period. The National Organization for Electronic Protection described the content as a serious provocation and an affront to the religious and spiritual values of Moroccan society, as well as a violation of public morality and public order.
Moroccan authorities have not publicly commented in detail on the evidence supporting the charges. Under Moroccan law, criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
