Morocco welcomes 7.7 million tourists through May as arrivals rise 7%

Morocco received 7.7 million tourists in the first five months of 2026, a 7% increase from the same period a year earlier, extending the strong momentum that has made the kingdom Africa’s most visited destination.

The Ministry of Tourism said 1.7 million visitors arrived in May alone, up 13% year on year, reflecting continued growth across key source markets and stronger air connectivity.

Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor said the results validated Morocco’s strategy of investing simultaneously in air links, tourism infrastructure and visitor experience. She said the approach was helping sustain growth and strengthen the country’s appeal among international travelers.

The latest figures build on a record 2025, when Morocco attracted 19.8 million visitors, cementing its position as the leading tourist destination in Africa.

Tourism remains one of Morocco’s most important economic sectors, accounting for roughly 7% of gross domestic product and serving as a major source of foreign currency and employment.

The government is targeting 26 million annual visitors by 2030, when Morocco will co-host the FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. Authorities have expanded air routes, promoted new destinations and encouraged investment in tourism infrastructure as part of that strategy.

The May performance follows a strong first quarter, during which Morocco welcomed 4.3 million tourists, also up 7% from a year earlier despite broader uncertainty affecting global travel markets.
