Moroccan authorities have foiled an international drug trafficking operation in northern Morocco that allegedly involved a helicopter entering Moroccan airspace illegally to collect a shipment of narcotics, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
The operation, carried out late last week in Fahs Anjra province near Tangier, resulted in the arrest of one suspect, while three others remain at large. Investigators believe the suspects are linked to a cross-border trafficking network operating between Morocco and Spain.
According to the sources, Royal Gendarmerie officers pursued a vehicle that failed to stop at a security checkpoint and was allegedly transporting a significant quantity of drugs intended for delivery to the helicopter.
Searches conducted in the Bni Wassine area led to the seizure of several items, including Spanish SIM cards, face coverings, bladed weapons, and quantities of hard drugs.
Investigators also traced the rented Volkswagen Touareg allegedly used in the operation to the company that owns the vehicle.
Preliminary findings suggest the suspects were working on behalf of a major drug trafficker active between Morocco and Spain. Authorities continue to investigate the case and identify all individuals involved.
The incident comes weeks after another suspected smuggling operation involving a light aircraft that briefly entered Moroccan airspace before quickly departing, raising questions about the use of aircraft in cross-border trafficking activities.
