Moroccan nationals once again led the list of foreign residents granted Spanish citizenship in 2025, with more than 42,114 Moroccans naturalized during the year, according to updated data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), as reported by Spanish media El Confidencial.
This marks a slight decrease from 2024, when more than 42,900 Moroccan nationals were naturalized.
The report mentioned that Colombians came second with 37,712 cases, followed by Venezuelans with 36,271.
At the regional level, Catalonia recorded the highest number of cases with 70,933, ahead of the Community of Madrid with 69,566.
It also noted that nationals from Latin America dominated the figures, with nine of the ten most frequent nationalities coming from the region.
The list also included Honduras with 20,745, Peru with 15,920, Cuba with 14,390, Ecuador with 13,689, Argentina with 11,291, the Dominican Republic with 9,915, and Nicaragua with 8,951.
Overall, 299,732 foreigners obtained Spanish nationality in 2025, an 18.7% increase compared with 2024, marking the highest level in the last decade.
The report said that most citizenships were granted through residence, with 253,836 cases recorded.
Another 45,715 were obtained by option, mainly involving individuals who were or had been under the parental authority of a Spanish citizen or whose father or mother was Spanish and born in Spain.
The source said that this route was particularly common among those under 20, who accounted for 88.9% of all cases.
