A Spanish court has sentenced a man to 15 months in prison for repeatedly subjecting a Moroccan waiter to racist and humiliating abuse at a café in Santander, the Cantabria regional judiciary said.
The Cantabria Provincial Court also imposed an €813 fine and ordered the defendant to pay the victim €4,515 in compensation, bringing the total financial penalty to €5,328. The ruling is final.
The defendant, a regular customer at the café, admitted repeatedly referring to the employee using racist slurs in front of customers and colleagues. The court found that the harassment caused the waiter an adjustment disorder involving anxiety and depression.
During Wednesday’s hearing, the defendant acknowledged the facts and told the court he was “deeply sorry.” He had already deposited €1,539 toward the compensation, prompting prosecutors to reduce their original request of 18 months in prison and €9,000 in fines and damages.
The prison sentence was suspended on condition that he commit no further offence for three years and complete the outstanding compensation payment. After telling the court that he had lost his job, he was allowed to pay the remaining €2,976 in monthly instalments of €150.
