Melilla residents have issued an urgent appeal to the Governor of Nador, requesting immediate administrative intervention to resolve severe bottlenecks and long delays at the Melilla -Beni Ansar border crossing

According to Spanish news agency Europa Press, the association sent a formal letter to Moroccan regional authorities following growing complaints over processing inefficiencies disrupting daily transit at the Beni Enzar crossing, one of the main border points between Morocco and the enclave of Melilla.

The petition describes what the group called a critical situation at the border transit points, where travelers reportedly face waiting times that can exceed ten hours. The association stressed that the delays affect traffic in both directions, causing major disruption for thousands of families and daily commuters crossing the border.

According to the written appeal signed by the association ’s legal representative, Mohamed Ahmed Moh, the current conditions at the checkpoints are creating significant physical and psychological strain for travelers. The group noted that the prolonged waits are especially difficult for vulnerable people, including elderly travelers, pregnant women, patients, and families traveling with young children.

The association added that many travelers are forced to remain under high temperatures for extended periods without sufficient access to rest areas or basic assistance services.

The association also warned that the accumulation of travelers and slow administrative procedures are generating growing social tension, while negatively affecting cross-border coexistence and the region’s image.

The appeal to Moroccan authorities comes after the group reportedly sent a similar request to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, calling for closer bilateral coordination on border management.

The community further emphasized the urgency of resolving the issue ahead of Operation Marhaba, the annual summer transit operation that facilitates the return of millions of Moroccans residing in Europe who travel through Spanish ports and land borders to visit their home country.

The association cautioned that if operational adjustments are not implemented before the peak summer travel season begins, the influx of transit passengers will severely compound the existing congestion.

Concluding its letter, the Muslim Community of Melilla expressed confidence in the responsiveness of Moroccan regional authorities, urging the adoption of “practical, efficient and humane” measures capable of preserving traveler dignity while maintaining necessary security procedures.
