Mamelodi Sundowns won the CAF Champions League title on Sunday night at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat after holding AS FAR to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the final.
The South African side secured the continental crown thanks to its 1-0 first-leg victory, finishing the two-legged tie with a 2-1 aggregate advantage to claim the title in the Moroccan capital.
The opening half featured an open and balanced contest, with both teams creating chances and exchanging attacks.
AS FAR captain Mohamed Rabie Hrimat opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 40th minute, giving the Moroccan side hope of overturning the aggregate deficit.
However, deep into first-half stoppage time, Teboho Mokoena equalized for Sundowns with a powerful strike that left goalkeeper Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti with no chance, sending the teams into halftime level at 1-1.
AS FAR pushed aggressively after the break in search of another goal that would revive their hopes of winning the title.
The Moroccan side was handed a golden opportunity in the 75th minute when it was awarded a second penalty, but Hrimat’s effort was saved by Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Despite sustained pressure from the Moroccan club during the closing stages, Sundowns held firm to secure the CAF Champions League trophy.
The triumph marks the second African title in the club’s history after its first CAF Champions League success in 2016.
