A Florida based digital news outlet shut down this month after an investigation found that its reported journalists, editor profiles and much of its content had been generated using artificial intelligence tools.
The investigation, conducted by nonprofit outlet Florida Trident in partnership with KCRW’s “Question Everything” podcast, found that the website “South Florida Standard” relied on fake AI-generated reporters, complete with fabricated biographies and synthetic profile photos.
The site had presented itself as an independent local newsroom covering politics, public services and community issues in South Florida.
Investigators reported that many published stories were partially copied or recycled from legitimate media outlets before being rewritten through AI systems and republished under fictional bylines.
The operation drew attention after reporters noticed unusually high publishing volumes and inconsistencies in staff identities.
The probe linked the website to Philadelphia based entrepreneur Drew Chapin, who later acknowledged operating a network of 17 AI assisted news sites.
According to the investigation, Chapin said such websites could be launched quickly using low cost domain names, AI text generators and automated publishing tools.
After the findings were published, the South Florida Standard website went offline. Kelly McBride of the Poynter Institute warned that the case demonstrated how easily convincing but fraudulent local news platforms can now be created at scale.
