In pictures: FICAM 2026 youth-led animation turns dark, political and immersive in Meknès

Films about child soldiers, exile, grief and emotional isolation dominated this year’s edition of the International Animation Film Festival of Meknès (FICAM), as younger filmmakers at Morocco’s leading animation festival moved further away from fantasy driven storytelling and toward politically charged, intimate narratives.

The 24th edition of the festival, held under the theme “Young people make their own animations,” awarded its top prizes to works centered on war, migration, trauma and memory, part of a trend in international animation circuits where hand drawn aesthetics, auteur storytelling and immersive formats are increasingly displacing polished studio styles.

French director Agnès Patron’s Une Fugue won the Grand Prix of the International Short Film Competition with a 15 minute film built around a child moving through a dark painted forest shaped by loss and fear.

Using rough gouache textures, abrupt sound design and fragmented movement, the film stood out in a lineup where many directors favored tactile, low gloss visual approaches over digital spectacle.

Other short film winners reinforced the same direction. Sylwia Szkiłądź’s Autokar, which received a special mention, follows an eight year old Polish girl traveling alone across Europe during the 1990s, while audience award winner Two Ships by American filmmaker McKinley Benson focused on a couple struggling to maintain a relationship while working opposite night schedules.

The Youth Prize went to Tigre et Renard: Les animaux aussi pleurent leurs morts, a hand painted film about animal grief directed by Romain Verlinde and a student collective, while ex aequo student awards went to Lina Saïdani’s À l’Ombre des draps and Gauze, a Gobelins produced short following a Palestinian teenager navigating war in Gaza.

The feature film Grand Prix went to Allah n’est pas obligé by Zaven Najjar, adapted from Ahmadou Kourouma’s novel about a Guinean child soldier moving through West African civil wars with “four dictionaries” and a sharply defensive sense of humor. Rather than depicting violence through graphic realism, the film relies on fragmentation, irony and stylized visual distance.

Several filmmakers and festival participants framed animation as one of the few mediums still capable of depicting conflict and trauma without reproducing the saturation effect associated with constant live footage and social media imagery.

That shift was also visible in the festival’s VR competition, where Iranian director Négar Motevalymeidanshah’s Less Than 5gr of Saffron won both the Jury Grand Prize and Special Mention. The seven minute immersive work follows an Iranian woman in exile in Germany, using domestic cooking rituals and close spatial immersion to explore memory and displacement.

Audience honors in the VR category went to Menghui Huang’s abstract immersive work The Big Cube.
