Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot announced Wednesday that King Mohammed VI is planning a state visit to France, which they described as a major milestone in relations between Rabat and Paris.
Speaking during a joint news conference in Rabat, Bourita said the planned royal visit would include the signing of an unprecedented Moroccan-French treaty.
“There is also the state visit of King Mohammed VI that is scheduled, and which will be marked by a special and unprecedented event: the Moroccan-French treaty,” Bourita said, noting that it would be Morocco’s first treaty of its kind with a European country.
Nasser Bourita added that a joint high-level Moroccan-French commission would meet in July under the leadership of the two countries’ prime ministers ahead of the royal visit.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said Paris was also preparing to host King Mohammed VI for what he called “a historic landmark in French-Moroccan relations.”
Barrot said the bilateral treaty would also be unprecedented for France.
“It will be the first treaty of its kind for France with a non-European country,” he said, adding that its objective would be “to establish a framework for French-Moroccan relations for the coming decades.”
A Moroccan diplomatic source told AFP in June 2025 that the bilateral commission meeting would precede a royal visit that had previously been postponed several times.
