Morocco actively contributed to the proceedings of the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, held in New York from May 11 to 15, by facilitating several negotiation sessions.

In a press release, the National Agency for Waters and Forests (ANEF) stated that on behalf of the Kingdom, the Agency’s Director General, Abderrahim Houmy, in his capacity as Vice-President of the Bureau of the United Nations Forum on Forests, facilitated several negotiation sessions, thereby helping to steer the debates and strengthen dialogue between member states and international partners.

In terms of negotiations, Morocco played a key role as a facilitator, working to bridge the positions of the various delegations and foster a consensus around the resolution adopted during this session, the same source specified.

This resolution notably emphasizes accelerating the implementation of the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests, achieving the Global Forest Goals by 2030, as well as strengthening international cooperation, forest financing mechanisms, and technology transfer.

It also recognizes the initiative led by Morocco in support of the Forum’s work, particularly regarding community-based forest management, technological innovation, and sustainable financing for the forestry sector, thereby confirming the Kingdom’s position as a committed, credible, and influential player on the international stage.

Through this high-level contribution, ANEF reaffirms its commitment to strengthening international partnerships and mobilizing efforts to achieve global goals in forestry and sustainable development.

In May 2024, Morocco, represented by Houmy, was elected as a member of the Bureau of the United Nations Forum on Forests, representing the African continent for the 2024-2026 biennium. This election reflects the trust placed in the Kingdom of Morocco both by African nations and within UN bodies. It consolidates our country’s leadership, under the enlightened Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in the fields of the environment and sustainable forest management.

This international meeting takes place against a global backdrop marked by intensifying challenges related to sustainable forest management, most notably the effects of climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and the growing pressure of human activities on forest ecosystems.

Created in October 2000 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the United Nations Forum on Forests is a subsidiary body tasked with promoting the management, conservation, and sustainable development of all types of forests, the ministry concluded.
