Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani praised Morocco’s support for the Syrian people during years of conflict and announced a new phase in bilateral relations as the two countries move to restore full diplomatic ties.

Speaking Thursday during a joint press conference in Rabat alongside Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, al-Shibani described relations between Syria and Morocco as “historic,” saying Syria would not forget Morocco’s political, humanitarian and moral support over the past 14 years.

He also commended Morocco for refusing to normalize relations with Syria’s former government during the conflict period.

Al-Shibani said the first official contact between Syria’s new authorities and Morocco took place roughly 20 days after what he referred to as the “liberation” and the fall of the previous regime. During that exchange, both sides emphasized the importance of reopening and strengthening diplomatic relations, he said.

The Syrian minister announced that Syria would officially reopen its embassy in Morocco on Thursday and said Morocco’s foreign minister is expected to visit Damascus to formally inaugurate Morocco’s embassy there.

According to al-Shibani, both countries agreed to launch a comprehensive framework for bilateral cooperation beginning with political coordination between their foreign ministries and expanding into economic, educational and trade sectors.

He added that the two sides also agreed to establish a joint business council and deepen cooperation by drawing on Morocco’s experience in several sectors.

“Our discussions revealed many shared priorities, concerns and challenges,” al-Shibani said, adding that relations between Syria and Morocco are now developing “in an upward trajectory.”

In a joint statement issued after the talks, Syria also reiterated its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, while welcoming the latest United Nations Security Council resolution endorsing what it described as a realistic political approach to resolving the Sahara dispute.
