India reaffirmed on Thursday its commitment to the “respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of states, stressing that the principles of the UN Charter must remain the foundation of international relations, amidst a global context marked by geopolitical tensions.
In a national statement delivered by the Indian Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during a BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting devoted to global and regional issues, underlined that dialogue and diplomacy are the only sustainable means of resolving conflicts.
The world is facing “unprecedented” geopolitical and economic uncertainty fueled by conflicts and climate-induced disasters, with particularly severe consequences for emerging markets and developing countries.
These countries, he noted, continue to face pressures related to energy, food and fertilizer security, as well as supply chain disruptions, inflation and constraints on growth.
The conflict in the Middle East “merits particular attention,” the Indian minister declared, noting that persistent tensions, risks to maritime traffic and disruptions to energy infrastructure highlight the fragility of the situation.
In this regard, he stressed the importance of ensuring “safe and unimpeded maritime flows through international waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea,” describing them as vital for global economic welfare.
