The Pine Bluff City Council in Arkansas has unanimously approved a resolution supporting United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in October 2025, and backing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Sahara, according to the local news outlet Pine Bluff Commercial.

The source emphasized that the measure, approved in April, also reaffirmed the city’s sister-city relationship with Dakhla.

Ahead of the vote, Pine Bluff Mayor Vivian Flowers said the resolution had undergone several revisions.

She said it was “the third revision they received,” following changes submitted by a representative involved in the sister-city partnership.

City Attorney Althea Hadden-Scott said the edits were minor, describing them as “small changes” to the wording of the document.

The resolution echoes the U.S. position in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces.

The United States has been increasing its efforts to advance the U.N.-led political process on the Sahara and implement Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in 2025, including hosting multilateral consultations involving Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria and Mauritania.

The talks, held in Madrid, support efforts to reach a mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute, as Washington steps up its engagement alongside the United Nations in the diplomatic process.

Massad Boulos, senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump on Arab and African affairs, recently said the Sahara dispute has made “significant progress” in recent months following the adoption of Resolution 2797, which he described as a turning point in efforts to revive the political process.

He also said recent meetings between the concerned parties were “good and somewhat productive,” adding that Washington hopes to see further progress in the next phase.
