A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Meknes on Saturday evening, according to Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics.
The tremor was recorded at 6:33 p.m. local time and was centered in the commune of Ain Jemaa at a depth of around 9 kilometers, the institute said in a bulletin.
Authorities said the relatively shallow depth of the quake made it perceptible to residents across the area.
No casualties or material damage were immediately reported following the tremor.
Morocco experiences periodic seismic activity due to its location near the boundary between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, particularly in northern and central regions of the country.
