Moroccan truck drivers whose vehicles were set ablaze in Mali on Wednesday are currently safe and staying at a hotel in Bamako following visits from Morocco’s ambassador and local officials, according to the General Union of International and National Transport Professionals, cited by Hespress.
Union secretary general Chergui El Hachmi said the drivers received financial assistance, essential supplies and psychological support after the attack, which targeted Moroccan trucks operating in the region.
El Hachmi said arrangements were underway to transport the affected drivers toward Nouakchott under security escort to ensure their safe passage despite ongoing instability in the area.
He described the security situation in Mali as “out of control,” warning that other foreign trucks came under gunfire on Thursday and escaped only through evasive maneuvers.
According to field information and testimonies from drivers, at least 14 Moroccan trucks were set on fire by an armed group.
The union official also called on Moroccan authorities to urgently assist other Moroccan drivers reportedly stranded across Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Niger amid mounting regional insecurity.
