A Rabat court on Tuesday convicted YouTuber Mohamed Reda Taoujni in a defamation case brought by Prince Moulay Hicham, sentencing him to a fine of 100,000 dirhams and awarding 600,000 dirhams in civil damages to the prince.
The ruling came after the case was placed under deliberation during a hearing held on April 21.
Taoujni was prosecuted over allegations of defamation linked to statements published on his YouTube channel, which Prince Moulay Hicham’s side said amounted to an attack on his dignity and reputation.
In a prior statement to Hespress, the prince’s lawyer, Abderrahim Jamai, stressed that freedom of expression is firmly defended but must remain within the limits of individual dignity and reputation. He added that his client turned to the courts as a citizen who felt harmed by what he described as a smear campaign, and said the defence was ready to contest any evidence presented before the judiciary.
