Moroccan authorities have detained hundreds of migrants from sub Saharan Africa in operations around Tangier over the past week, as part of ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration toward Europe, according to local sources who spoke to Hespress.
Daily sweeps carried out in forested areas and transit zones led to the arrest of at least 100 migrants per day, reflecting an intensification of controls in northern regions that serve as key departure points toward Spain.
The operations follow a similar campaign earlier in April, when more than 800 migrants were detained near Tangier and Fnideq during coordinated security actions targeting attempted crossings.
Sources said those detained are being transferred to other regions, particularly in southeastern Morocco, in a bid to prevent repeated attempts to reach coastal routes. This relocation tactic has been used in previous operations to disperse migrant groups away from northern corridors.
Security forces involved in the operations include the Royal Gendarmerie, national police, auxiliary forces and local authorities, operating across transport hubs, forests and known crossing routes toward Ceuta and northern beaches.
Morocco remains a central transit country for migrants attempting to reach Europe, with authorities stepping up coordination with European partners in recent years. Official data show that more than 73,000 migration attempts were thwarted in 2025, alongside the dismantling of over 300 smuggling networks.
